Video: Ballymote Town, County Sligo, Ireland – November 1991

Here is a bit of video filming I done in November 1991 of Ballymote, a small town in County Sligo, Ireland.

Sorry for the bad quality it was transferred off an old VHS Video Tape which had got damp and mould on it from over the years! – I suppose I was lucky I managed to get anything at all recorded from it, but if you can see through all the lines and jumps it will give you an idea of what Ballymote looked like in November 1991.

Here is what’s Changed over the years:

The Post Office building is still here:

1991
2019

The GARDA Building

This used to be the GARDA (police) station – its not in that place any more but moved years ago into a new building to the other part of town

Camera Craft

Ah now this used to be a lovely little shop – Camera Craft on Lord Edward Street (opposite Kanes Londis Supermarket, which is still there) used to offer amongst other things a photography and wedding filming service, office services such as typing, printing and photocopying, Passport photos and sold film cameras – later on it offered a PC computer repairs Service even! .
By all accounts the fella that run it (Andy) was a fantastic likeable guy (I can vouch for that!) – alas the shop shut down in 1998 – then became a hairdressers and was demolished around 1999 I think and now a Chemist stands there.

Perrys Payless DIY:

This was a Handy little DIY and gift shop – no longer there now

The Corran Restaurant:

The Corran Restaurant is no longer there – but a fast food establishment is in its place these days.

Casey’s Chemist:

Casey’s Chemist Teeling Street – No longer there

Scully’s Bar

Scullys HorseShoe Bar – Teeling street (no longer there)

McDonaghs TV & Electrical:

McDonagh TV & Electrical Shop – Teeling Street.
Great shop this is where you would go for your TV’s washing machines, light bulbs hoover bags – even Calor Gas Bottles!
Vinnie McDonagh was a lovely gentleman sadly no longer with us but very friendly and nothing was ever too much bother for him.
The shop now these days is a MS Charity shop.

Do you remember any of these old shops in Ballymote? – why not leave a comment in the comments section below:
